Whenever a customer takes delivery of their car after we wrap it in genuine Garware, Avery Dennison, or Cosmo TPU film at our studio on Town Hall Road, Irinjalakuda, I always tell them one honest thing before handing over the keys:

"Brother, you have just invested good money to put the best invisible armor on your car. But PPF is not a magic shield that stays shiny forever on its own. How you wash it and treat it over the next three years decides whether it looks brand-new or tired."

A lot of shops in Kerala tell customers, "Sir, once PPF is done, you don't have to worry about anything." That is simply not true. While a genuine Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) film protects your original paint from gravel, bush scratches, and stone chips, the film itself is an elastomeric material that reacts to dirt, heat, and harsh chemicals.

If you want your PPF to stay crystal clear, gloss-rich, and self-healing for years, here is our straightforward, workshop-tested maintenance guide.

1. The Crucial First 7 Days: Don’t Touch It

When we install PPF, we use a specialized slip and tack solution to position the film and squeegee out moisture. Even after the edges are wrapped tightly, microscopic moisture pockets remain underneath the film that need natural evaporation and sunlight to bond completely to your clear coat.

Do not wash the car for the first 7 days: No pressure washer, no bucket wash, and definitely no roadside quick wash.

Keep away from high-speed driving in torrential rain: Heavy highway rain splashing directly against fresh bumper seams can push moisture under uncured edges.

Small water bubbles are normal: If you spot tiny hazy water bubbles during the first 3 to 5 days, do not poke them with needles or try to push them with your fingers. They breathe out and dry completely under natural Kerala sunlight.

2. Washing PPF the Right Way (Where 90% of Owners Fail)

The easiest way to ruin a topcoat on a Rs. 1 lakh+ PPF wrap is by handing the keys to a roadside wash center that uses hard borewell water, harsh laundry detergents, and dirty shop rags.

Here are the strict washing rules we follow and recommend:

Strictly Use pH-Neutral Car Shampoos: Never let anyone wash your PPF with dish soap, clothing detergent, or caustic degreasers. Harsh alkaline soaps dry out the elastomeric polymers in the film, making it lose its natural gloss and flexibility.

The Two-Bucket Method with Grit Guards: Always wash with two buckets—one with soapy water, one with clean water to rinse your wash mitt. If you drag trapped road grit across the film, you will leave fine surface abrasions.

Watch the Pressure Washer Distance: A pressure washer is great for rinsing off thick Kerala red mud, but never bring the pressure nozzle closer than 12 to 18 inches from the film. More importantly, never spray directly at wrapped panel edges or seams at an angle. Direct high-pressure water can lift the adhesive edge.

Never Wipe It Dry with an Ordinary Cloth: Use a plush, clean microfiber drying towel (at least 500+ GSM). Never wipe dry Kerala road dust with a duster—always pre-rinse the dust off with water first.

3. How to Deal with Bird Droppings, Bug Splatters & Tree Sap

Kerala is blessed with lush greenery, but parking under trees in places like Irinjalakuda, Chalakudy, or Mala comes with hazards: acidic bird droppings and sticky jackfruit or mango tree sap.

While a quality TPU film stops these acids from eating into your original clear coat, bird droppings left baking under the noon sun for 3 days will leave an etched stain on the film's topcoat.

Clean it immediately: Keep a small spray bottle of clean water and a clean microfiber cloth in your boot. Soften the dropping with water, let it dissolve for 30 seconds, and gently lift it away. Never scrape it dry with your fingernail.

Yellow tree sap stains: If tree sap has already dried and hardened, wash the area with warm water and mild shampoo. Do not use kerosene, thinner, or nail polish remover—harsh solvents will permanently melt the top layer of polyurethane.

4. How the "Self-Healing" Feature Actually Works

One of the best benefits of genuine TPU films (like the Garware, Avery Dennison, and Cosmo lines we install) is elastomeric self-healing. Light swirl marks, fingernail scratches inside door handle cups, and fine bush scratches can heal on their own.

It Needs Warmth to Heal: The topcoat rearranges itself when exposed to heat. On a sunny afternoon in Kerala, parking your car in the sun for an hour will automatically smooth out minor surface marring.

The Warm Water Test: If you want to clear light scratches quickly, pour a cup of clean warm water (around 50°C to 60°C—not boiling water) over the scratched area. You will watch light swirls disappear before your eyes.

Know the Limit: Self-healing only works on light surface marring. If a sharp stone or deep key mark has cut completely through the topcoat into the core polyurethane, it will not heal.

5. Can You Wax or Ceramic Coat PPF?

Yes, but you have to use the right products:

Avoid Abrasive Polishes & Rubbing Compounds: Never let a local workshop run a rotary buffing machine with heavy abrasive cutting paste on your PPF. Abrasives will strip the self-healing topcoat permanently.

Avoid Waxes Containing Petroleum Distillates: Cheap paste waxes with heavy naphtha or kerosene solvents can degrade film edges and cause discolouration.

Ceramic Coating on Top of PPF is Ideal: Applying a dedicated, flexible ceramic coating over your PPF is one of the smartest upgrades you can do. It makes the surface insanely slick, meaning muddy monsoon spray and road oil roll right off, keeping the film cleaner with less washing effort. 6. The Periodic Studio Checkup (Every 6 to 12 Months)

Just like you service your car’s engine, a PPF-wrapped vehicle benefits from a quick studio checkup once or twice a year:

We inspect all tucked edges around bumpers, bonnets, and wheel arches to ensure zero lifting or trapped road grime.

We perform a gentle chemical decontamination to remove bonded industrial road fallout and iron particles that regular washing cannot lift.

We apply a specialized PPF sealant or booster that keeps the polyurethane supple and resistant to UV yellowing.
